There are many ways to show news, but this is the most used one - on front page we got chronologically ordered articles (starting from latest one). For every article we show small photo, date/time, title, short version of article and link to page which displays detailed news. Link it self is SEO - it contains news title, so Google and other search engines will index it better. Because we can have thousands of news we cant's show all of them on one page, but, we are showing few of them per page and at bottom of the page we got paging links. Internal search of course includes all news articles.
